Comprehensive Language-Literacy Evaluations:
This assessment includes differential diagnosis of dyslexia, dysgraphia, oral written language disorder, and/or specific comprehension deficit. We use a conceptual model of language development, which more clearly describes how deficits involving literacy affect language in oral and written tasks.
- Case history: An in-depth look at your child’s family, developmental, medical, and educational history gives a complete picture of your child so we can serve your family better.
- Direct Assessment Measures: Our center owns a large number of assessments to ensure each evaluation tool used is specific to your child’s needs.
- Written Report: An in-depth, professional and easy to understand report that includes an explanation for each test used and their results, clinical impressions, intervention recommendations, and items for your child’s school-based team to consider is provided following completion of direct assessment and data analysis.
- Follow-up Meeting: During this meeting we will review all the results and you can ask any questions you have about the report.
- Free digital copy of Dyslexia Advocacy. After the assessment is complete many parents ask, “Now what? How do I talk to the school about all this?” This book answers all your questions and will put your child on the path to success.

Evaluation for Plan of Care development
If you’re not interested in a complete diagnostic session but want to get started with intervention this is the way to go.
Your child will have a mini-assessment that is prescriptive but not diagnostic, and indicates exactly where to begin intervention. We specialize in a structured literacy intervention program called SPELL-Links that is supported by the most current research.
This program focuses on reading and spelling using a speech to print method of instruction that’s in alignment with a child’s natural language development patterns.
- Prescriptive spelling assessment that generates specific recommendations matched to your child’s current level of word study knowledge.
- Quantitative assessment measures to be used for progress monitoring.
- Plan of Care with goals tailored to your child’s needs.
- Performance-based instruction that allows for explicit, intensive instruction and accelerated learning compared to other, scripted programs.

Therapeutic Intervention
Research tells us that explicit reading instruction will improve reading, but explicit spelling instruction will improve spelling and reading.
Intensive instruction will close the gap between your child’s performance level and grade-level norms.
Many children spend years in reading intervention only to remain poor spellers, this can be prevented with a more intensive focus on spelling.
- A focus on use of metalinguistic strategies decreased the need for memorization of rules, while increasing your child’s reading and spelling independence.
- Instruction targets all areas crucial to foundational reading and spelling development such as sound awareness, spelling patterns, and meaningful units of speech.
- Functional carry-over activities are used during treatment and given for home practice.
- Yearly progress reports to show growth and improvement. You can request progress reports more frequently at a reasonable fee.

Independent Educational Evaluations
The Individual with Disabilities Education Act says that you have the right to request an independent evaluation if you do not agree with the school-based evaluation.
At Kentucky Language & Literacy Center we have experience with IEEs and provide comprehensive evaluations for speech-language pathology services. An in-depth questionnaire is given to both the parents and teachers to ensure all areas of concerns are assessed.
We use the most current testing material that’s in alignment with your child’s specific areas of concern. Results include norm referenced and qualitative assessments to create a whole picture of your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

- Parent & teacher checklists: You know your child best! We want to know how they perform at home and what you see happening in different areas of language. This ensures all areas of concern are thoroughly assessed.
- Direct Assessment Measures: Our center owns a large number of norm referenced assessments and standard, informal assessments to ensure each evaluation tool used is specific to your child’s needs.
- Adaptive Behavior Analysis: This may take place in the classroom or clinic observation. It will describe how your child performs during educational related activities.
- Written Report: An in-depth, professional and easy to understand report that includes an explanation for each test used and their results, clinical impressions, intervention recommendations, and suggested goals as appropriate.
